The first question on a roller shutter is the slat type. Solid slats give the highest security but close the shop window completely. Perforated slats keep the display visible, so people can still see inside at night; they are slightly weaker on security but the window keeps working for you. The decision depends on the trade.
Aluminium slats are light, easier on the motor and enough for most shops. Steel shutters are heavy and rigid, and get chosen for depots, industrial units and higher-risk entrances. As the weight goes up so does the motor class. Cheap quotes that ignore this show their hand in the first year.
An automatic shutter opens with a remote or a key switch. Do not buy one without a manual release. Not being able to open or close the shop during a power cut is the complaint we hear most.
On repairs, motor replacement comes up most often. After that: snapped belts, slats out of the track, and a bent bottom rail. A bent bottom rail is usually a vehicle knock, and replacing the single slat normally fixes it without renewing the whole shutter.
